The Survival Project

This original work by Mihai Măniuțiu was inspired by The Negro Motorist Green Book, a travel guide for African American motorists, published annually between 1936 and 1966. Măniuțiu has used this historical work as inspiration for an original dance-theatre performance piece that explores exclusion and provides a survival guide for those who, given the odds stacked against them, “should not survive.”

The Survival Project is as much about the narratives of survivors as it is about love, connectedness and mental health. Through physical and vocal expression, it seeks to critically analyze the human condition by showcasing seemingly disparate narratives from around the world and showing that we are all connected – that we are all responsible for one another. It emphasizes that sometimes in loving one’s country, your country hurts you but that is the mark of true love. It encourages members of less powerful groups to maintain the light and continue fighting for humanity even though you may be weary. It challenges us to remember history that has been forgotten but paved the way for global change. It suggests that when a country betrays you, it takes time to trust it again and heal. Sometimes the first step in learning to rebuild is to acknowledge and reject the negative thinking and depression that often come with survival; i.e. “I’m fearless and invulnerable; I deserve unearned suffering.” Only when one combats these negative associations, examines the past and learns to love oneself can the oppressed hold hands with the oppressor. Only when the oppressor acknowledges its privilege and truly loves the oppressed as much as he loves himself can we build a better world together.

This is not a show about victims or victimization. However, it bravely explores the essence of those who have tried and failed and tried again and survived.

Multiple "sequences" come together to create a powerful piece of theatre.

These are the stories that make great theatre, and indeed, that keep us personally inspired and hopeful in difficult times. As citizens of this particular sociopolitical moment, when we are bombarded from every outlet to the brink of despondent apathy, we invite you to join us in living journeys of those who were faced with substantial adversity, but survived – and thrived – against all odds.
